Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET)

This test is considered the gold standard for determining disability. Using advanced technology measuring oxygen and carbon-dioxide while breathing through a face mask we are able to accurately assess the person’s capacity to work. This is significant to conditions where fatigue and reduced physical ability are common symptoms. CPET identifies activity thresholds to assist in the management of conditions such as Myalgic Encephalomyalitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).

We offer two testing protocols:

1 Day Test Protocol

We measure your body’s ability to use fat and carbohydrates both at rest and during exercise. During the resting test you will be measured resting on a bed for 15-20 minutes. The exercise test is performed either on a stationary bike or a treadmill. The exercise intensity will begin at a low level and may be advanced in stages depending on your fitness level. You may be exercising for 8-12 minutes.

IMPORTANT: There is a risk of exacerbation of your symptoms following exercise testing.

Benefits of this protocol

  1. Helpful in determining Post Exhersional Malaise (PEM) and symptom of exacerbation following physical activity
  2. Determine anaerobic thresholds and using heart rate pacing to better manage symptoms
  3. May cause less exacerbation of symptoms compared to the 2 day protocol

Appointment 1:   CPET

You will need to fast for at least 6 hours prior to these tests.

Allow 90 minutes for this appointment.  $360

Appointment 2:   Results & Education

Your tests have been analysed and you will be provided with a detailed explanation and summary of your results (This does not include Medico-legal report).

Allow 30 minutes for this appointment.  $120

Medical Report

A detailed medical report can be produced to accompany your results. This may be used for medico-legal purposes.  Up front payment is required and reports can take up to 3-4 weeks to finalise. $180

2 Day Test Protocol

We measure your body’s ability to use fat and carbohydrates both at rest and during exercise. During the resting test you will be measured resting on a bed for 15-20 minutes. The exercise test is performed either on a stationary bike or a treadmill. The exercise intensity will begin at a low level and may be advanced in stages depending on your fitness level. You may be exercising for 8-12 minutes. This test will be performed on two consecutive days.

IMPORTANT: There is a high risk of exacerbation of your symptoms following exercise testing.

Benefits of this protocol

  1. Helpful in determining Post Exhersional Malaise (PEM) and symptom of exacerbation following physical activity
  2. Determine anaerobic thresholds and using heart rate pacing to better manage symptoms both on “good” days and “crash” days
  3. There is evidence based resources available showing the importance of the 2 Day test to demonstrate the functional impairment unique to ME/CFS. The 2 Day test protocol was developed by the experienced researchers and clinicians at Workwell Foundation
  4. Results of the tests may add value to any medical or legal argument

Appointment 1:   First CPET

You will need to fast for at least 6 hours prior to these tests.

Allow 90 minutes for this appointment.  $360

Appointment 2:  Second CPET (24 hours later)

You will need to fast for at least 6 hours prior to these tests.

Allow 90 minutes for this appointment. $360

Appointment 3:   Results & Education

Your tests have been analysed and you will be provided with a detailed explanation and summary of your results (This does not include Medico-legal report).

Allow 30 minutes for this appointment.  $120

Medical Report

A detailed medical report can be produced to accompany your results. This may be used for medico-legal purposes.  Up front payment is required and reports can take up to 3-4 weeks to finalise. $180
